The graphic design industry, it seems, is slowly colliding with (or more like bleeding into) it’s different specialties. Some say the age of the “specialist” designer (i.e. print, motion, web) could be obsolete in the future. Nonsense I say. Though I do believe that every designer should at least get their feet wet in different branches of our fantastic industry (that’s a whole other topic), projects like this “Live the Language” campaign show the glory of seamless collaboration between individuals that are quite talented in their respective fields. Collaboration at its finest.

I first saw these “Live the Language” videos on Vimeo earlier this year. The thumbnail showed this neat type treatment of sorts. I didn’t expect much; it’s rare to find commercial advertisement that kept the importance of typography in mind throughout the process. But I was pleasantly surprised (wanted to stand up and clap!) Obviously we’re dealing with “language” therefore the typography to these videos should be (or had to be) flawless in order for it to be effective, judging by the final product of course.

Needless to say (you’ll see what I mean once you see them below) these “Live the Language” videos were so elegantly put together and well thought out, almost as if they are each their own short-film. Great story telling, beautiful cinematography, engaging sound design but here’s the kicker (and where most great shorts fall… well… short) the type treatments were so well put together that they seem like they belong in each clip. No superfluous design elements, no cheap type tricks. Just clean, fun, and intelligent typography that instead of distracting from the visuals, just adds that little extra frosting to them.

I tweeted about the vids and the man behind the type, Albin Holmqvist, and we’re in touch to do a blog inteview for my next Onyx Group blog! Very very excited to talk with him and pick his brain. Yes! I’ll keep you guys posted on that.

In the meantime, enjoy these delicious treatments, get lost in the stories, learn a new language and share the love. My favorite one you ask? I find them all unique but since ‘Paris’ was the first one I saw and connected with emotionally (and the fact I may be a sap about love) I’d have to say that’s my fave.

This Website redesign project started earlier in 2011. Was commissioned by Samuel Gualtieri from A New More Beautiful and worked closely with Programming guru, Adrian Mummey.

I was excited to collab with all three gentlemen and after receiving the brief and seeing the vast field of creative freedom, I immediately began researching for innovative and clever ways to design a “church” website. A few things I wanted the site to have: lots of crisp photography, large typography, minimal and exciting color palette, easy & dynamic navigation.

The client was great about changes. Overall, our visions were parallel and I was quite happy with the end result as my bud, Adrian, was able to pull off any type of coding curveball I threw his way! Enough chit-chat. Check it out below!

A look at the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of the WOL church website.

The home page has various carousel of images. Making it simple to find what you’re looking for.

FAQ Header Style

 
A neat feature to the WOL website redesign is this dropdown menu style ‘secondary header’. Much bigger than the original ‘home header,’ this would serve as an easter egg of sorts giving the website that ‘ooh aah’ wow factor.

I’ve been an iPhone user since the iPhone 3G debut. In my opinion, this little device revolutionized how we use mobile phones! Yes, I’m one of those guys. And being that I spend quite a long time on my phone, looking at it, I decided to make some iPhone Walls for myself (and eventually I decided not to be greedy and share!) So here are 60+ iPhone wallpapers FREE downloads.

Back in early June I was hanging out on what was one of favorite hangouts in the outskirts of Overtown, a place called ‘Bar’ (or Black Bar to some) right next to Vagabond. I learn that Bar is closing by July to our dismay (only to re-open as Mamushkas later on). But during all this commotion I find out a movie set will be built right down that whole block, “Rock of Ages” (yes, from the musical), starring a whole bunch of people. Quite exciting since my friends and I hang around that area all the time, who knows we might run into Tom Cruise or Catherine Zeta-Jones. Maybe even be an extra!

If you’re from Miami you know, though Downtown is getting a great face-lift, some areas are still quite shady. None-the-less, enter Hollywood professionals to completely remodel two blocks worth of Real-Estate. The colors, typography, the feel just all very delicious. Of course, like you, I thought “I need to do a shoot here before they tare this all down!” So we did.

I called my lady friend Arlene Delgado (@ArleneTime) and we did a quick photo sesh right there. I’m still yet to upload all the photos but I did a couple below just so you can get the feel of it.

The trailer was released today! Was really cool to see it in person, but then to actually see it all did’ up in the movie trailer was fantastic! Below is the photo session with Arlene, movie trailer, movie stills and set photos.

Hands down, one of the best films this year in my opinion and in Rolling Stone‘s opinion is Drive.

If you haven’t seen it, shame shame on you! Directed by, Nicolas Winding, this movie was just cinema art. You’d think by the title, it was another ‘Transporter’ish’ flick and that’s far from it. It’s creative, engaging, colorful and motivating. And not to mention the soundtrack, good Lord!

This movie quickly grew on me. I saw the trailer but my lady friend @Maz, turned me on to the soundtrack. I went late night to a cinema at Coconut Grove with my bud @JustJohnfrank and we both walked out feeling fresh and confident for some reason. So much so, we plugged in the iPod and just cruised to the music.

This post is dedicated to all things Drive in retrospect. There have been loads of tributes, videos, songs, print pieces and the like. Even the talented James White from SignalNoise.com did his own version of the Drive Movie Poster and had a give-a-way in his blog. Favor was on me and I won one of the twenty that were printed in limited edition! Shek it out below.

If you haven’t seen the flick, go buy it on DVD or Blu-Ray once it releases on January 31 (ish.) Enjoy the tributes!

So I found this dude, Nook, while looking for some new iPhone 4 wallpapers in this site, there were definitely some pretty fantastic pieces of art. This one in particular stood out. I’m a big dork when it comes down to anime, arcades and music and this illustration had it all! I am now full of anime swagg on my iPhone.

Enter Nook, an illustrator based in Brooklyn, NY with a unique style combination of anime with and future/vintage (if that makes any sense).

I can’t believe I didn’t find his work before. He’s been featured in numerous blogs including Abduzeedo.com. And as far as I can tell, he’s kind of a big deal and his work is phenomenal enough to prove it.

I’ve been an amateur photographer for a few years and probably will be for a few more ’til I get the hang of this new venture. I’m always looking for inspiration and styles to learn from. One particular style I love to emulate is this vintage / washout photography that’s popular in catalogs like Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, Nylon Mag and the like. Even posted a quick tutorial in my blog for Light Leaks.

So in my search for the mysterious photographer that has single-handedly branded that Heritage 1981 style, I stumbled upon the amazing work of Christopher Kilkus. I know his work mostly due to the Forever 21 (Heritage 1981) style that’s branded that Fashion Co. Without a doubt he has a fantastic eye for composition and a unique post-production style that many envy.

In a nut shell, it’s a simple and easy way to send big files to everyone without the hassle of registering or waiting.

I have personally used the site numerous times. I like everything they have to offer, but what I find most interesting and why I go back, ironically, is the way they advertise. I find it’s such a creatively clever way that keeps aesthetics priority. The uploader is also interactive, you can move it around as you please. Also, if you click on an advertisement, it pops up in a new window conviniently. I’ve placed some samples below.

Here are a few other factors that trump sites like Mediafire, YouSendIt, MegaUpload and the like:

Designing for yourself is probably one of the most tedious undertakings you will probably have in your creative career. After all, you are your own worst client. So when I had to rebrand myself for my final graduating portfolio review at Miami International University of Art & Design, I really had no idea which direction to go.

I did a bunch of research, looked at some of my favorite blogs, asked for advice and it turns out, I really like the end result.

LOGO / IDENTITY
A type-treatment based on the Houschka Pro typeface. I was looking for something iconic. My names initials are three A’s and I’ve tried to some how create a treatment with that, but in the end, it seemed a bit obvious and complicated. I decided to keep the icon elegant and simple.

COLOR
PMS 1665 yea, it’s orange.

COLLATERAL
The business card was probably my favorite focal point in the branding process. I knew I wanted to print these in letterpress. I’ve been wanting to get letterpressed business cards for quite some time. I did a bit of research, found great places like the good folks at BeastPieces.com but decided to go with an individual that does letterpress up in Providence, Dan Wood of DRWI Letterpress. He sent me a few samples of his work and I was sold instantly. I asked him to color the sides of the business cards the same PMS color chosen for the rest. Here are the specs:

I kept the design clean with tons of whitespace (whitespace is your friend) and, yes, I spelled out my phone number. It actually reads really well! And when people see it, they do a double take. People tend to remember clever shenanigans.

The Letterhead was simple enough. I had to condense my two page resumé to one page with the help of my professor at AiMIU. Back in 2009 when I first edited my resumé, I found a few sites that helped in the process:

WEB
The site has been a monster process. I’ve looked at literally hundreds of blogs and folios by designers, getting ideas and inspiration. My conclusion was, I wanted a site that wasn’t cluttered with links, images, ads etc. I wanted a portfolio style site/blog that everything was easy to find.

On the home page, I wanted large photos of my work, photography and articles. I think photos are visually more appealing than a bunch of type. And believe me, I love typography. Also, Twitter serves as a great way to get personal with people on your page. So my Twitter feed is large and in charge.   I had my bud from Australia, Dan Mui, code the site after I sent the intial wireframes, in wordpress. No templates for me, thank you. He does great work, and this is probably our fourth time working together on a web project.

All in all, I’m ecstatic about how the site turned out. Overall, the brand is cohesive and strong and I’m quite happy with it.

Every Designer and Photographer has their own style of retouching and post-production when it comes down to photos. It’s interesting that my best bud, David Moreno and I, always argue as who’s the better “retoucher.” He has his style, I have mine.

For example, Fabio from Abduzeedo posted on his blog, “A trend that is becoming more and more popular in Photography recently is a vintage/film/retro style. You can see examples in Urban Outfitters, Nylon Mag, Anthropologie, etc. One of the major elements in this style is the light leak.” and he continues to post a tutorial (which I included below and inspired this one) about Light Leaks.

I’ve been asked quite a few times as to how I touch-up the photos I take (or clients) to give it that certain feel. So here are a few bullet points as to how I accomplished the photo above with that vintage feel we all love in Adobe Photoshop.

This is for intermediate users, meaning you should already know where everything is. If you’re a beginner, download the actions below, install them in Photoshop and play around with the settings til’ you get it just right and watch the videos.

• Download the Photoshop Actions by Manicho below.
• Adjustment Layers: Curves and Selective Color are your friends.
• Curves: See the image below and play around with those settings
• Selective Color: Mess around with the white, neutral and black channels be taking away blues and/or yellows.
• Color Balance: Also play around with white, neutral and black channels.
• Creamy glows with the brush tool for a bit of lighting effect are on these photos aswell.
• Depending on the effect/style you can choose to Sharpen or Blur the photos.

• You can add a vinyette to the photo with around 30 % opacity for additional lighting effect.

When it comes down to browsers, I’m a die-hard Firefox user (Explorer/Safari who?).  All the features, addons, stability are splendid.  I’m also a Google Chrome beta tester. I downloaded Chrome back in 2008, though I loved the simplicity and extra real-estate, I stuck with Fox.

Recently all these ingenious ads for Chrome have popped up everywhere, boasting speed. I decided to give it a go. In one word… “whoa!” The speed the ads are so upfront about, is actually pretty accurate! I’m on Chrome right now as I blog about it. Not to mention the cool features like Auto-Translation, themes and omnibox among a bunch more. Will I leave my Mozilla Firefox party? Not sure yet, but Chrome is definitely making a splash in my kiddie pool.

Beastpieces.com writes: These two posters came to us from agency friends at Bailey Lauerman, illustrated by the ever fabulous Rilla Alexander of Rinzen. This TUNE project was sponsored via federal grant by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. Bailey Lauerman launched TUNE which uses music to inspire young women to make better choices and live healthier lives. There are 8 selected artists out of 150 entries, and their music was written and recorded specific for this project. Songs are free to download from the TUNE website.

We printed the posters with a split ink fountain using florescent pink and blue inks which blended to a nice purple in the middle. We kept the lateral ink distribution setting at maximum spread for a good blend in the poster. It was printed on French Paper Poptone Whip Cream 140lbC.

This is an iphone video of the job on press. Lo res, but you’ll get the idea of how the fountain looks.

I’m not one that enjoy’s horror movies, the macabre nor gore, but this collateral package by Jacques Pense is absolutely brilliant. Make sure you checkout his portfolio.

Like many, I was one of the die-hard fans at the midnight showing of Iron Man 2. The movie was pretty awesome. Better than the first in my opinion. One thing that stood out was the mind-boggling VFX. I mean, the tech that Stark Ent. had was incredible! I wondered who on earth created such defying visuals? Enter Perception.

This is a fantastic breakdown of shots that were made for Iron Man 2 by Perception Studios NYC. According to GreyscaleGorilla.com, they crafted VFX and graphics in over 125 shots for the film varying from broadcast packages and logo treatments to full blown VFX shots with futuristic interface elements. They have a ton of before and after footage that shows all the incredible work that they put into this film.

Also that vintage logo brand was incredibly well done. This is a must see. READ THEIR OFFICIAL POST HERE.

Now below I added one of the coolest VFX pieces, the glass phone!

According to the Perception website, “Upon Successfully delivering all of the elements, Perception moved their attention to something they were fascinated with. While presenting concepts for the presentation, the client noted that one design in particular (see lower left panel of Expo Frames) reminded them of Tony Stark’s phone, a prop seen throughout the film. The moment the people at Marvel mentioned a “it’s like an iPhone, but transparent glass” the team at Perception all knew that whether requested or not, they had to mock up a test of the “Stark-Phone” in action. Since Perception initiated this test without a client brief or context for where it would appear in the film, they used it as a way of exploring several different concepts within a handheld interface, and even shot the scene in their studio.”

1. A logo doesn’t need to say what a company does
Restaurant logos don’t need to show food, dentist logos don’t need to show teeth, furniture store logos don’t need to show furniture. Just because it’s relevant, doesn’t mean you can’t do better.

The Mercedes logo isn’t a car. The Virgin Atlantic logo isn’t an aeroplane. The Apple logo isn’t a computer. Etc. Etc.

2. Not every logo needs a mark
Sometimes a client just needs a professional logotype to identify their business. Don’t be afraid to ask what they think.

3. Two-way process
Remember, things might not always pan out as you hope. Your client might request something you disagree with. If that happens, try giving them what they want, then show them what you believe is an improvement, and why. They’re less likely to be so resistant if they already see how their thoughts pan out.

4. Picasso started somewhere
You don’t need to be an artist to realise the benefits of logo sketching. Ideas can flow much faster between a pen and paper than they can a mouse and monitor.

5. Under-promise, over-deliver
If you’re unsure how long a task will take to complete, estimate longer. Design projects are like construction work — you piece lots of little elements together to form a greater whole, and setbacks can crop up at any time.

6. Leave trends to the fashion industry
Trends come and go, and when you’re talking about changing a pair of jeans, or buying a new dress, that’s fine, but where your brand identity is concerned, longevity is key.

Don’t follow the pack.

Stand out.

7. Work in black first
By leaving colour to the end of the process, you focus on the idea. No amount of gradient or colour will rescue a poorly designed mark.

8. Keep it appropriate
Designing for a lawyer? Ditch the fun approach. Designing for a kid’s TV show? Nothing too serious. I could go on, but you get the picture.

9. A simple logo aids recognition
Keeping the design simple allows for flexibility in size. Ideally, your design should work at a minimum of around one inch without loss of detail. Look at the logos of large corporations like Mitsubishi, Samsung, FedEx, BBC etc. Their logos look simple and are easier to recognise because of it.

10. One thing to remember
That’s it. Leave your client with just one thing to remember about the design. All strong logos have one single feature to help them stand out.

Not two, three, or four.

One.
